Videos Songlist Gigs

If you’ve never hoofed it to a SHANKS PONY gig before, then you simply don’t know what you’re missing.

With catchy songs such as Bring On The Pints and Fiddle The Books from their debut album A Year In A Pub, the four-piece is distinctively Australian with Celtic roots – a style that has made them a crowd favourite.

Their unique brand of folk-rock (or “colonial rock” as has been suggested) has made SHANKS PONY highly-popular with audiences in venues around Perth and country WA, including Fenians, JB O’Reilley’s, The Shed, Clancy’s, Murphy’s Irish Pub, Mighty Quinn, Mojo’s, The Best Drop Tavern, The Boat, Woodvale Tavern, Dunsborough Tavern, Nannup Hotel and the Quindanning Tavern.

That’s not to mention headlining WA’s 2008 Nannup Music Festival and embarking on an eastern states tour for good measure as well. But what do you expect when a band is described as “an Australian version of The Pogues”? High praise indeed for a high-profile band…

SHANKS PONY have a come a long way in a short time, after settling on a firm line-up in late 2006, featuring Peter Varcoe (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, ukulele, mandolin), Garry Howard (drums), Haydn Pickersgill (bass) and Todd Lynch (piano accordion, melodica).

Early 2007 saw the release of SHANKS PONY’s debut album A Year In A Pub, capturing the true spirit of the band, as described by Colin Merrey in his review: “The boys have a very energetic approach to their music which is reminiscent of the great Australian bush bands” (Irish Scene, July/Aug 2007).

Lynch cites Weddings Parties Anything, Flogging Molly, and The Pogues as influences for the quartet, helping them to deliver up-tempo versions of Aussie bush tunes while breathing new life into Celtic traditionals.
